Shanghai is set to only allow the sales of cars that meet Euro5 emissions standards. Shanghai is following in Beijings footsteps, which also enacted a Euro5 emissions standards for all vehicles sold in Beijing last year.
Shanghai’s ban on non Euro5 emission vehicles also stretches to light trucks, motorbikes. Trucks other 3500kg are currently exempt from the sale, but are expected to be included once truck manufacturers reach the standard.
Shanghai was the first city in China to enact emission standards, with Chinese 1 (an equivlant of Euro1) emissions standards being made into law in 1999, China 2 was later enacted in 2003.
The standard will only to new car sales, where as previously bought sub Euro5 cars will still be able to take to the roads as usual.
Prior to the enactment of Euro5 standards in Beijing, dealerships were offering massive discounts on non Euro5 models, which meant that the consumer benefited more than ever.
